Parts of a residential roof system
Decking
The plywood or boards the roof is fastened to. Soft or rotted decking has to be replaced before new roofing goes on.
Underlayment
The waterproof layer under shingles or tile. On tile roofs it does most of the waterproofing.
Flashing
Metal at walls, chimneys, valleys, skylights and vents that directs water away from joints.
Ventilation
Intake at the eaves and exhaust near the ridge. Poor ventilation traps summer heat in the attic and shortens shingle life.
Roof covering
Shingles, tile or membrane. The part you see, and the part most bids focus on.
Edges
Drip edge and fascia details that carry water off the roof edge instead of letting it wick back onto the deck.
